Dialogue No. 16

I am fascinated with pattern. It becomes a departure point in my painting: I change and curve lines reroute them, and delete them. This ever-changing interaction sets into motion a dialogue between my process and the subject of my work: revealing and hiding; the delicate and the strong; the doubtful and the confident – sensibilities common to us all. My painting processes such a rubbing and glazing among others, allow me to achieve the woven and cloth-like quality I seek. The result is not texture for texture’s sake, but observed subtleties in the canvas all playing a part in my dialogue. Similar to scenic medieval tapestries, their intricate patterns, complexity, and myriad colors shift when seen from different angles. Instead of telling stories, though, my paintings yield an abstract experience.
