Albert Newbill

In a statement written for a class at Cornell University in 1978, Newbill said that art should “reflect the mysterious, hidden realities that lie behind the facade of ordinary thinking or feeling… The function of art is to make the insignificant, significant, the usual, unusual, and familiar, unfamililar.”His attitude about art as a highly personal expression did not change throughout the years. “Painting shouldn’t come out of a direct experience, it comes out of a myraid of experiences.”  Newbill believed all good art comes from a kind of reflection, and from looking at things creatively. “Most people look, but they don’t see. Seeing takes all your senses. People are trained to look at things in a certain way, but an artist must look beyond the training and realize that things aren’t what they seem.”
